Thanksgiving wth Lupus

http://lupus.about.com/popular.htm

This is to anyone with a disease that requires you to stay on a Kidney Renal Diet. And to the folks that are not sure how to feed guests that need to diet this way.
I am not completely on one of these diets, but I do have to be careful.
I know how hard it is to watch EVERYTHING you put in your mouth. To plan before hand is what I am doing. For one starting now I am eating carefully as I can. And I am watching my food intake. We all need to be careful with what the Kidneys can filter. That is sort of a rule.
But there are a ton of awesome recipes on the web.
I put some on here...I hope I added the websites right , I'm very tired today.
At the top I put a site to understand Lupus a bit better. This way if one of your guests has Lupus or a similar Auto immune disease you can understand and deal with them better.
There are many more sites and a lot of books you can get from the Library.
If you don't want the whole meal to be diet foods, pick and choose carefully and watch the next day.
If your doctor wants you on a strict diet there are some very good yummys on the web.
If you are invited to someones home and you need to watch your food, ask if you can bring your own food...most ppl' understand.
Try to make everything the day before so you are not rushing around getting all tired and stuff...lol
Stick to the basics.
You will want to:
1)Have something on your plate to take the place of Turkey or Ham.
2)Pick one or two veggies you are allowed to have.
3) find a gravy on the web for your food.
4) Find out what kind of bread you can have.
5)Bring your own drink.
6)Most of us can have WHITE rice, so bring some as a filler.
7)Find a small treat you can have also.
Watch portion control.
Just go by these few things and your day will stay comfortable. And you won't end up sick.
I know the meal is the big deal, but try to find other things just as fun so you are not dwelling on what you can not have.
Ask to help clean up so you are moving around. We tend to get sluggish and tired very fast. Not the typical after Turkey Sluggish. But sick fatigued sluggish.
If someone you invited has an auto- disease make an area for them if they need to rest. Sometimes we don't want to ask. And sometimes we really just need to lay down. Somewhere quiet and away from everyone. We may only need to lay down for 10 minutes. It can makes us feel funny if we are sawing logs in front of others.
When you get up have a cool glass of water, but not to much.
I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.
There is much more on the web to help.
So all you sickies, we can still have a great meal and a fun day..
So enjoy!
Anita
