From a news release from Lake County Film Society:
The Lake County Film Society is excited to announce ILL-Docs, a new documentary film festival running Sept. 26 and 27.
"Because of the growing number of fantastic documentaries we've been seeing over the years, we've decided to start a whole new film festival for them" said Film Society director Nat Dykeman.
Friday, Sept. 26 will start with a free screening of America Unchained.
The schedule is as follows:
America Unchained
Friday, Sept. 26
7 p.m.
Writer/subject Dave Gorman's quest is a simple one: to drive cross country from Los Angeles to the Atlantic Ocean never spending a cent at a chain restaurant, chain hotel or chain gas station. But in a country where the mom and pop shop is nearing extinction, does the independent spirit of America still thrive enough to go coast to coast? And how do you do it all while being a vegetarian, anyway? Gorman and Devonshire's insightful film opens up the back roads of the country to find the heart of America.
On Saturday, the festival will run from noon – 10 p.m.:
Mystery Movie
In an effort to bring the best possible films to Ill-Docs, we are leaving this time slot open to book a last minute film. It might be a bigger documentary, fresh off of a theatrical run, or a premiere of something that hasn’t been shown before. It might even be a collection of some short films. Either way, we hope you’ll be adventurous and come be surprised.
Audience of One
A Pentecostal pastor receives a vision from God to create an epic, $50 million science fiction movie based on the biblical story of Joseph, sending him and his followers on a journey of extreme faith.
Similar to American Movie, Lost in La Mancha, Overnight, and other character driven docs about filmmaking.
Overdrawn!
While out of town taking care of his grandparents, Karney Hatch discovered he has accidentally overdrawn his bank account. When he returned home he discovered that his $60 in purchases had cost him an additional $140.
Overdrawn!, a close-up look at how the banking industry harvests billions of dollars from consumers in the form of overdaft and other fees. Hatch covers the entire spectrum of the issue, interviewing consumers, bankers, advocates like Ralph Nader and Carolyn Maloney, attorneys and even a loan shark.
While producing Overdrawn!, Hatch made a huge discovery. After making some small purchases on an overdrawn card, he takes the bank to small claims court and they return all of his fees. Similarly, in England, a consumer revolt has led to 1 billion dollars in returned fees. While this is only the 2nd festival to show Overdrawn!, it has already been featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered” and in the Chicago Tribune.
Spine Tingler: The William Castle Story
Throughout the 1950's and 60's, William Castle produced and directed a series of horror films marked by their outrageous audience participation gimmicks. Castle treated moviegoers to buzzing seats, flying skeletons, luminescent ghosts and life insurance policies - and they loved every minute of it. Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story is a documentary about the last great American showman. It is a rags to riches tale of a legend of exploitation and master of self-promotion, yet a man privately plagued by a fear of failure and a desperate desire to be respected among his peers.
San Francisco: Still Wild at Heart
In the summer of 2003, a wild coyote took up residence on San Francisco's Bernal Hill- a tiny patch of open space surrounded by houses, roads, and freeways. Where did he come from and how could he arrive at this small oasis of prairie grassland in the heart of a modern American city?
San Francisco: Still Wild at Heart explores the mystery and wonder of the coyote's surprising existence in this dense urban setting. This one-hour natural history film shows that the hill has supported animal and plant communities for millions of years, including such exotic creatures as mastodons, camels, grizzly bears, and eagles.
At the Death House Door
The newest film by Steve James (Hoop Dreams, Stevie, Reel Paradise). Carroll Pickett presided over 95 executions in his 15 year career as the death house chaplain to the infamous "Walls" prison unit in Huntsville, Texas.
He kept his feelings about his work from his family, instead audiotaping an account of each one. Initially pro-execution, he became an anti-death penalty activist.
Pickett was most affected by the execution of Carlos De Luna in 1989. He firmly believed in De Luna's innocence. Evidence uncovered by Chicago Tribune reporters Maurice Possley and Steve Mills strongly supports Pickett's view.
