United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Chicago (UCP), with sponsorship from Whole Foods Market® (WFM) Deerfield, will be the beneficiary of two events: 1.) Computer and electronic recycling drive at Wilmot Elementary School (795 Wilmot Road, Deerfield, IL 60015) on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 9 a.m.–noon; and 2.) Community Support Day at WFM® Deerfield (760 Waukegan Road, Deerfield, IL 60015) on Wednesday, Dec. 12 from 8 a.m.–10 p.m.

The events will benefit UCP’s Assistive Technology Exchange Network (ATEN) program, which gives Illinois public school children with any disability access to educational technology via refurbished computers. In-kind and cash proceeds from the two events will benefit school children from Deerfield and surrounding suburbs.

UCP anticipates hundreds of electronic and computer-related item donations (including cell phones, printers, fax machines, monitors and other peripherals) at the Dec. 8 recycling drive. Durable medical equipment devices, such as canes, crutches, walker and wheelchairs will also be acceptable donations. All devices or equipment in any working condition will be accepted. All donations are tax deductible. A gift basket donated by WFM® Deerfield will be raffled off at the completion of the drive. You must donate an electronic device or medical equipment item to participate in the raffle.

Community Support Day at WFM® Deerfield on Dec. 12 will ensure 5 percent of all sales benefit UCP’s ATEN program.

Established in 1995, ATEN gives Illinois public school students (K–12) with disabilities access to educational technology via refurbished computers. There are two direct beneficiaries of ATEN: the children with disabilities who receive the customized, refurbished technology, and the Illinois landfills through the diversion of computer electronics containing lethal toxins and other hazardous material.

Since its inception, ATEN has provided Illinois students a total of 38,225 refurbished computer systems in 1,628 schools in over 811 communities. ATEN has 10 offices/drop-off locations, including one in Highland Park at 776 Red Oak Lane; phone: (847) 467-3862.

Last fiscal year, ATEN provided just under 4,000 recycled computers to 117 schools in 51 communities throughout Illinois. Approximately 65 percent of the recipients are located in the metropolitan Chicago area. Because of ATEN, children in Vernon Hills, Highland Park and Mundelein received customized and refurbished computers last year. Incorporated in 1951, the mission of UCP of Greater Chicago is to advance the independence of people with disabilities, enrich their lives, provide support to their families, and advocate for their inclusion in every facet of community life.
