Onigiri, Japanese lessons on menu at library
Ruth Hoffman, president of Language Resources Ltd. of Lake Zurich, introduced herself to the group with a few words of Japanese.

Families had fun with food June 18 at the Glencoe Public Library as the rice for the onigiri was cooking and Ruth Hoffman was giving language lessons.

The lessons for the day were centered on Japanese words since the snack they would be making were onigiri, a rice ball snack popular in Japan.

After learning the words for bowl (boru), water (mizu) and soy sauce (shoyu) among others, the children and their parents were able to make the onigiri out of sticky rice.

The rice balls could be filled with different types of tuna and rolled in sesame seeds or rice seasoning with a strip of nori (seaweed).
