From the Pioneer Press:
A former New Trier High School senior who hacked into the school's computer system to check his class ranking was sentenced today to one year of court supervision and ordered to perform 50 hours of community service.
The sentence imposed on 18-year-old Jonah Greenthal came as part of a plea deal with Cook County prosecutors after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of computer tampering for twice breaching the Winnetka school's academic database.
Once in the system, prosecutors said the teen -- who was allowed to accept his diploma in June, though he was barred from graduation -- accessed confidential school records, including class rankings, teacher salaries, and grade histories for students in the classes of 2005 through 2011.

From the Chicago Sun-Times:
Jonah Greenthal said he hacked into the computer system at New Trier High School to check his class rank, but the 18-year-old senior found much more than that.
Greenthal managed to tap into confidential school data that included teacher salaries, medical records and grade histories for students who had graduated as long as three years ago, authorities said Wednesday.
Insisting he didn't mean to cause any harm, Greenthal apologized for his actions Wednesday as he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of computer tampering.
