The director of Exiled, Johnnie To, is not widely known in the United States outside of fans of Hong Kong cinema, but he certainly deserves to be. Set in Macao in 1998, Exiled works as a highly stylized example of Hong Kong action cinema while also offering a tribute to the films of Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah (especially The Wild Bunch).
Tim Knight of Reel.com states, “A smashingly effective gangster yarn, laced with black humor, stylized violence, and classical western film motifs, Exiled makes most American crime dramas look exceedingly bland in comparison.”
