Looking to raise awareness and funds for the Spirit of Truth School and Orphanage in Haiti, Vernon Hills resident Ruth Paul-Caudle is organizing a 10K Run / 5K Walk set for May 31, 2008.
The Hope for the Hungry Walk-A-Thon will take place at Old School Forest Preserve in Libertyville and involves a 10K run at 8:00 a.m. and a 5K walk at 8:30 a.m.
Proceeds will fund building an addition to the over-crowded orphanage and provide the children living there with clean drinking water and indoor plumbing. Profits will also benefit the Spirit of Truth School.
The value of participation is considerable. If a family of three or more walks for just three miles, the cost of its participation will pay for a child’s school tuition for one entire year.
People can register for the run/walk at www.Haiti-World.org. Costs are $30 per adult for the 10K run, $25 per adult for the 5K walk, $15 for children ages 13-17 and $10 for children ages 12 and under. Family registration is $60.
Participants also have the choice of collecting pledges, an opportunity for them to raise even more donations. Individuals may also register at the event. All registered participants will receive a free t-shirt and access to a food tent.
Special events for the walk-a-thon include an online silent auction for a Devin Hester autographed football and a Chicago Bears jersey signed by the team. People may bid for the items at www.haiti-world.org beginning May 1.
There will also be a raffle at the walk-a-thon. Raffle prizes include video games, spa packages, software, electronic items, and Caribbean paintings.
