Independence Day safety tips

From a news release from the Village of Lake Bluff :

The Fourth of July can be a fun time in the community with great memories for adults and children alike. In the State of Illinois and the Village of Lake Bluff, Class C explosives (sprinklers or smoke bombs) are the only fireworks that are legal.

Although some classes of fireworks are legal, they still create a serious hazard and the Lake Bluff Police Department would like to offer the following fireworks facts of which all families should be aware:

• Sparklers should be kept outside and away from the face, clothing, and hair. Sparklers can reach 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot enough to melt gold.
• Store fireworks in cool dry places.
• Always use fireworks outside and have a bucket of water and a hose nearby in case of accidents.
• Stay clear of others when using fireworks. Fireworks have the potential to backfire or shoot in the wrong direction.
• Do not hold fireworks in your hand or have any part of your body over them while lighting. Also, always wear eye protection, and avoid carrying fireworks in your pocket.
• Light one firework at a time (not in glass or metal containers), and never relight a dud.
• Soak all fireworks in a bucket of water before throwing them in the trash can.

The National Fire Protection Association estimates that local fire departments respond to more than 50,000 fires caused by fireworks each year.

If you or a loved one is injured by fireworks, immediately go to a doctor or hospital. If an eye injury occurs, do not touch or rub the eye, as this may cause more damage. Also, do not flush the eye with water or apply ointment. Instead, cut out the bottom of a paper cup, place it around the eye, and immediately seek medical attention. If a burn occurs, remove any clothing from the burned area and run cool (not cold) water over the burn (do not use ice) and call your doctor immediately.

Play it safe with these helpful facts and have a blast this Fourth of July!
