Kids explore big rigs at "Meet the Fleet"
Amanda Hamilton, 2, of Lake Villa gets behind the wheel of a Lake Forest Police squad car.

Lake Forest workers in the parks and recreation, sanitation, fire and police departments use a variety of large and unusual vehicles on a regular basis, but once a year local kids get a chance to be behind the wheels of these rigs.

At the annual "Meet the Fleet" event held July 11, fire trucks, street sweepers, construction equipment, and other vehicles used by city departments lined up in the parking lot of Deerpath School, and hundreds of children were allowed to get up close and inside each of them.

"A lot of kids are fascinated by trucks and heavy machinery," said Superintendant of Parks and Recreation Wendy McKiernan. "They come in from all over to get inside the trucks."
