Anyone who lives in Libertyville knows that Summit Café has some of the best ice cream around. Residents liked it so much they nominated the local shop on Good Morning America.
The ABC-TV television program searched the entire country for the best ice creamery in the country and found one of the best in Libertyville.
Summit Café on Milwaukee Avenue was named as one of the Top 10 ice creameries in the United States by the show's "Best Scoop in America" competition. Good Morning America gathered suggestions from across the country before narrowing down the choices to a top 10 list, according to a news release from MainStreet Libertyville.
Summit owner Guy Stehley received the news from a Good Morning America producer via telephone May 8, Stehley said.
Summit missed making the number one spot. Voters on the show's Web site chose from the top four shops, with Moomers Homemade Ice Cream in Traverse City, Mich. Receiving the most votes.
"I was disappointed that we didn't make it into the top four," Stehley said. "But I think we did well considering we've only been here four years and we're in a relatively small town."
While the news was being released, the shop suffered a power outage from a storm that forced the staff to give away gallons of ice cream on May 30. To read more see this story in the Libertyville Review.
In addition to making its own ice cream on site using all natural ingredients, Summit also features sandwiches, gourmet coffee, gelatos and fresh baked goods served in a living room setting. Live music acts perform on weekends. This year the shop will be represented for the first time in the Taste of Libertyville festivities from June 12 to 15.
